The Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey organised an international conference on combating discrimination in working life on 17 April in Ankara. Patrick Charlier, Equinet Board member and Co-Director of the Belgian equality body Unia, presented the work on this topic at national and European level.
Human Rights and Equality Institution (HREIT)
Established by law within the framework of international conventions, the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey is an autonomous institution. The institution has been mandated to protect and promote human rights, guarantee individuals’ right to equal treatment, prevent discrimination in the exercise of legally recognized rights and freedoms, and fight against torture and ill-treatment. The Institution, which was established on 20/04/2016, operates as the equality body as well as the national preventive mechanism and the national human rights institution.
Conference on Combating Discrimination in Working Life
On 17 April, about 200 participants participated in this international conference focusing on discrimination in working life. As you can see from the programme, the HREIT brought together speakers from academia, legal and political decision makers, trade unions as well as international organisations such as the ILO and Equinet.
Charlier spoke about the role of equality bodies and the work of Equinet, giving a European perspective to the proceedings. Following the Turkish examples of discrimination in working life given previously, it was interesting to note that the problematics and the challenges that we are facing are the same in nature: inequality and discrimination against women (gender pay gap, sharing the burden of private life, disability, prejudice and exploitation of migrants, …), though perhaps with a difference of intensity.
